Here we have a simply beautiful, fully restored 1952 Rolex Oyster Perpetual 10ct Bubble Back, Thunderbird. This is Rolex model reference 6085 and is the full-sized or big Bubble Back, being 34mm in diameter as opposed to the earlier 1940s Bubble Backs which were 32mm. The full bubble back as opposed to the later shallower ‘semi’ bubble back, produces the total watch depth of 12.5mm including the relatively low profile original lens.
The watch has a wonderful cream-white honeycomb dial with classic 1950’s gold Dauphine Hands and gold faceted baton hour markers, the sweep seconds hand counts a 1/5th seconds on the outer minutes track. The dial is one the finest examples of classic ’50s Rolex style and elegance and is one we cannot fail to admire each time we look at it. This is the original dial which has been restored to the very highest standards. We use the best dial restorers in the UK and really have made a wonderful job here! A new Rolex lens has been fitted.
For a number of reasons, the 10ct solid yellow gold, 34mm Bubble Back case, is also very pleasing. Firstly and most obviously the Thunderbird bezel is in such great condition. This was a popular addition on the early 50’s Bubble Backs however, they are prone to damage through knocks and scrapes and so to cover these, the bezel is often over polished, losing definition. Here however, the bezel is in really excellent shape and showing only minor signs of wear. The case-body, lugs and screw down crown are equally good, all of which indicate the watch has had very light use and very careful ownership. The full bubble back screw down case-back is also prone to damage in the form of dimples and scratches and here there are none. Of course, the great advantage of a 10ct case (made for the American market), as opposed to an 18ct case is that it is harder and so less prone to dents and scratches and this has no doubt helped this watch case to maintain its good looks and minimal signs of ageing! The inside of the case-back is properly signed with the early Rolex scroll, 0.417 10K Geneva Swiss Hallmarks and the case model number 6085 and externally between the lugs at 12 o’clock. The serial number 838,XXX is found externally between the lugs at 6 o’clock.
The original movement here is particularly nice and sparkling, in fact rather new looking. This also proves the watch has seen careful use and has been properly maintained and has definitely not suffered from any dampness or water ingress. This Chronometer grade movement is particularly strong, accurate and reliable, making this watch perfectly suitable for everyday use. The movement has just received a thorough overhaul and service by our watchmaker and so we have no hesitation in offering this watch with our 12 months warranty*. This warranty can be extended to 5 years for an extra £350 including a free service, when this becomes due in 4 years time!
Here we have a highly collectible vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to wear, use, treasure and enjoy!
This watch is a truly outstanding example of a 1952 vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Bubble Back in fully restored condition. It is ready to wear and may be used, if required as an everyday watch. The beautiful white Honeycomb dial, Thunderbird Bezel and case are in outstanding condition and the watch is a credit to its previous ownership.
If treated with care, this watch will make a sound investment or heirloom piece. Even though vintage gold Rolex prices have risen at around 15% per annum in the past 2-3 years, we still feel good examples such as this, are undervalued and as the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to grow, prices will inevitably climb ever higher.
