ABOUT THIS WATCH

Description

In spectacular condition, here we have a fully restored 1960 Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 18ct solid yellow gold, with the sought after smooth bezel. Known by Rolex as model 1005, this watch carries the high grade, Cal.1560 Superlative Chronometer (highly accurate and highly reliable) movement. In addition to the smooth bezel, the other notable feature here is the original black dial, which has been restored to the very highest standards. This watch is in amazing condition and looks wonderful dressed up with evening wear, or equally well with office or casual clothes.

The Dial

The rare original black dial here looks superb with the ‘Stick’ hands and faceted baton hour markers. The original, restored hands and needle seconds hand are all in excellent condition. In addition to the ‘Rolex Crown’ at 12 0′clock, the dial is simply signed ‘Rolex’, ‘Oyster-Perpetual’ and ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ with ‘Swiss,’ at the very bottom of the dial. The Rolex lens is new and therefore has no scratches marks or damage.

The Movement

This is the original, high grade “Superlative Chronometer”, 26 Jewels, 1560 calibre butterfly movement which is very highly regarded for being particularly accurate, reliable and robust. It is in superb condition and is working perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. It is marked Montres Rolex SA 26 Jewels and 1560. The movement has been time checked and calibrated on 19th September 2016 and is running perfectly accurately i.e. within ± plus or minus 6 seconds per day! Which I am sure all will agree is just amazing for a watch which is nearly 60 years old. This watch is now ready for many more years of reliable service and is perfectly suited for everyday use. The movement carries a 12 month warranty*  This can be extended to two years for £150 or five years, including a a service at four years for £350.00.

The Case

The superb condition original 9ct solid yellow gold case, measures 34mm in diameter, not including the Rolex Oyster screw-down crown. The highly desirable smooth bezel has no scratches, much like the rest of the case including the sides. The lugs and case -back are all in superb condition with no scratches, dings or other marks visible to the naked eye! The case has been professionally cleaned and very lightly polished and is now looking superb! Inside the case-back are two Swiss 18ct hallmarks and 18K 0.750. The case is signed  Montres Rolex SA Geneva Switzerland with the Rolex Model Number 1005 and the Rolex Serial Number 1,217,407, dating the watch 1960.

Please note, as part of the restoration we have replaced the rubber seals on this case and although the watch was specified as waterproof when new, this has not been tested and this is not guaranteed.  Our strong advice is that all vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.

Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, the numbers and markings on the movement, case and case-back are all correct, dating this watch to 1960. A detailed written description and receipt, with a 12 month warranty* and separate insurance valuation (for the replacement value in the event of loss) will be provided at the time of sale. We will also provide a Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee. (please see our FAQs).

The Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale.

In Conclusion

This is a superb example of a late 1960′s vintage gold Rolex, in immaculate condition. It is sufficiently different from the norm to be distinctive, yet still classic, and completely practical for everyday use. If treated with care, it will make an excellent investment and heirloom piece, particularly if it remains in such good condition.

Even though vintage Rolex prices have risen recently, we still feel good examples such as this have a long way to go and as each year goes by, the global market for vintage Rolex watches is expanding rapidly with a consequent effect on prices.

In summary, this is a highly collectible vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, ready to wear, treasure and enjoy. It will also provide excellent reliability and a sound financial investment  as long-lasting as the watch itself!
