Description

Longines is one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers with an unparalleled history of invention, innovation, patents and awards. They are also responsible some of the most beautiful watches ever made.

Here we have just such an example from 1954 when Longines were competing head to head and on level terms with the very best watch manufacturers in the world. This watch simply oozes Quality. It has a beautifully designed heavy weight 18ct case in mint condition and a gold over white restored dial with subsidiary seconds dial at ‘6’. It is certainly one of the most beautiful watches we have in stock right now and in hardly used condition.

The Dial

Sublime elegance! Beautiful gold numerals and spearhead batons and gold hands with a subsidiary seconds hand at 6 o’clock. All over a silk white dial, restored to incredibly high standards. Note the dial is completely clean, unmarked and in as new condition. This is classic 1950s, clean and simple understated high class! Just wonderful!… The dial, hands and lens are all in beautiful condition.

The Case

Mint condition, beautifully proportioned and superb high quality craftsmanship. 18ct solid gold with large fancy swept back lugs. At 32mm square this is a deceptively large case. Consider that at 42mm across the diagonal it could be compared with a round case of the same diameter. Inside the case back is signed Longines and with Swiss 18ct hallmarks with 18K, 0.750 with the case reference number 6394 2. The case has simply been very lightly cleaned and polished to bring it back to as new condition.

The Movement

This is the original super high grade and famous Longines Cal. 22A automatic movement, in sparkling ‘as new’ condition, signed Longines, 18 Jewels, with 23A and 8711907 dating the watch to 1954. Introduced in 1945 this was Longines first automatic, which was hugely successful and very highly honoured.

We have just serviced this movement and it is running beautifully. We are very happy to offer it with a 12 months warranty* and with care and with regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch movement to run happily for many many years to come.

The Strap & Buckle

A high quality black croc leather strap is fitted with a gold plated buckle. If you have a preference for another colour, for example dark brown or a different style of leather we will be pleased to change it for you.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct and date the watch to 1954. A detailed written receipt, warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The watch will be supplied in the new good quality presentation box shown in the photographs.

In Conclusion

This is a very rare and expensive in 1954 18ct automatic from Longines which very obviously demonstrates the superb quality, craftsmanship and technical prowess of the brand, at the time. We have always admired vintage Longines of this period and have never quite understood why they are so overlooked. Technically they hold their own with the much more famous brands such as Rolex and Omega. Viewed simply on a value for money basis, you will never a better ratio of quality bought to pounds spent than with a good, well cared for vintage Longines. Whatever the reasons they represent amazingly good value for now, considering their quality and such excellent pedigree.

And so this is an extremely rare and collectable vintage gold watch from one of horology’s most respected names which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!

If you have any interest in this wonderful timepiece please give serious consideration to the opportunity purchase, as it is not often an example of such superb craftsmanship and quality becomes available. And we guarantee if you own it, you will never be disappointed.
