Description
Here we have a most elegant 9ct Rolex Precision dress watch from 1956 with 1 – 12 classical gold numerals on a white dial. A notable feature of this watch is its fancy and ornate sculpted lugs. Note, although, this watch at 31mm diameter was a considered typical sized gentleman’s watch in the 1950s, it is probably better suited as a lady’s watch today.
The Dial
This is the classical gold on white 1950′s ‘1 – 12′ dial with the Rolex crown at 12 o’clock and is signed ROLEX and Precision. This is the original dial which has been freshly restored and completed to the very highest standard. The dial is very clean and easy to read even in low light. This is a beautifully understated and elegant dial in the imperial style with original gold ‘leaf’ hands and blued steel hands which look simply fabulous.
The Case
The professionally polished solid 9ct yellow gold case is in excellent condition having been very well cared for and shows only the the faintest signs of wear, visible to the naked eye. The press fit case-back clicks into place very satisfyingly and has never been inscribed. The case measures just over 31mm in diameter, excluding the Rolex crown and 38mm, including the lugs. This makes the watch better suited for a lady given the modern trend for out-sized watches. The case was made in England by Dennison for Rolex. The inside of the case-back is signed A.L.D. for Dennison and ‘Made in England for Rolex’ with the Dennison case reference 12857 and the correct Birmingham UK 9ct gold hallmarks dating this watch to 1956 with Rolex case reference number 755735.
The Movement
The high grade Cal.1210 manual wind movement is incredibly clean and in incredibly good condition. It has just been overhauled and serviced by our expert watchmaker and is running perfectly. It is signed Rolex SA, Geneva Swiss and Seventeen Jewels and marked with the Calibre 1210. In addition it carries the reference number N34491. This particular movement is in superb condition and with regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to run quite happily for another 60+ years! We are therefore very confident in offering this watch with a 12 month written warranty*.
Strap and Buckle
A high quality, new dark brown genuine lizard skin strap is fitted with a gold plated Rolex buckle (not shown but one will be fitted before sale). If a different colour or style of strap is preferred, we will do our best to provide this at no extra charge.
Box and Papers
Although there are no original papers with the watch, the numbers and markings are all correct, dating this watch to 1956. A detailed written receipt with 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value, will be provided at the time of sale. The presentation box shown in the accompanying photograph is included in the sale.
*Note – 12 Month warranty only included if the list price is paid.
In Conclusion
We love to find and make available vintage gold Rolex watches of this quality and condition! This is a very desirable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
Even though prices have moved on quite a lot in the past 12 – 18 months, we still feel top quality vintage gold Rolex watches from this period are undervalued and as each year passes, the global market for vintage Swiss gold watches (and particularly Rolex) is growing almost exponentially, all of which tends to lead one to believe prices are likely to remain on their steep climb trajectory for the foreseeable future!
