Here we have a just beautiful, fully restored 18ct vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual, gentleman’s dress watch from 1955. This is Rolex model ref 6564, with the Cal.1030 Certified Chronometer Grade (highly accurate and highly reliable) automatic movement which has just received a full overhaul from our watchmaker. With its uncluttered none-date sunburst dial and smooth bezel, this is very elegant piece.

The Dial

The golden ‘Sunburst’ dial is a distinctive feature of this watch as it catches the light wonderfully and depending on the source and direction of the light it changes colour slightly. This can be seen some of the photographs. This is a simple, very elegant and classic example of Rolex Oyster dials from the 1950s. The gold Dauphine hands, needle seconds hand and gold arrow head hour markers and Rolex Crown at 12 o’clock are all classic Rolex dial motifs from this period. It is signed Rolex (the brand) Oyster (the waterproof case) Perpetual (the automatic movement). Also Officially Certified Chronometer means the movement has been tested and has qualified as a ‘Chronometer’ grade movement i.e. highly accurate and highly reliable by COSC the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute.

The Case

The original Swiss hallmarked 18ct solid gold case, measures 34mm in diameter, without the original Rolex Oyster crown. The case, case-back and bezel are all in superb condition with no marks or scratches visible to the naked eye. The bezel is the more desirable smooth type which with the simpler non-date dial gives the watch an elegant and understated look. The screw down Rolex sealed crown and screw down case-back made the watch impervious to water and dust when new. Inside the case-back is marked 0.750 18K along with two Swiss 18ct hallmarks, along with the model number: 6564. The model number can also be clearly found on the outside of the case between the lugs at 12 o’clock. The case serial number: 197985 can also be clearly found on the outside of the case between the lugs at 6 o’clock. This is nice to see because the external numbers are often lost on 18ct cases due to the strap rubbing against the case. This is also a sign that the watch has not seen a great deal of use! The case serial number indicates this watch was made in 1955. Note: the gold on this watch has a slight pink tinge to the predominantly yellow gold and this has been picked up in the photographs.

The Movement

The watch carries its original high grade “Officially Certified Chronometer” 25 Jewels, Cal.1030 movement which is highly regarded for being very accurate, reliable and strong. This particular movement is in beautiful sparkling condition and is running perfectly following a thorough overhaul by our watchmaker. It is signed ROLEX PERPETUAL with the Rolex ‘Crown’ trademark on the early ‘Butterfly’ rotor. The movement is also marked MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA SWISS, and carries the number 633079. The movement has been calibrated and timed and is running strongly and accurately at ± 10 seconds per day and it is now ready for many more years of reliable service. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement*.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new very high quality dark brown ‘croc’ leather strap. The buckle is a matching an aftermarket Rolex gold plated. Note ,if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. A genuine Rolex strap can be fitted at our cost price of £180.00.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to 1955. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 month warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs will be included in the sale.

This is a superb example of a 1955 vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual, 18ct automatic which is ready for wear and completely practical for everyday use. The movement has been calibrated and timed and is running strongly and accurately at ± 10 seconds per day and it is now ready for many more years of reliable service. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement*.

This is a superb example of an iconic gent’s early 1950s vintage Rolex in 18ct gold and in immaculate condition. It is a completely practical and ready for wear as an everyday watch and if treated carefully it will be an excellent investment or heirloom piece, particularly when kept in such superb condition. Even though vintage gold Rolex prices have risen recently, we still feel good examples such as this are undervalued.
