Here we have a very rare and simply wonderful Rolex Oyster Perpetual ‘Bombé’ in 18ct Yellow Gold from 1953. This is the rare Rolex model reference 6090, so called “Bombay” by collectors, referring to the bombé (French for sculpted) lugs on the case.
This example has seen extremely light use and is in mint condition. The watch also has its original ‘Super Oyster’ winding crown which only remained a feature of the Oyster Perpetual for three years, also adding to the rarity of this watch, plus it has the sought after smooth bezel.
The rarity, beauty and condition of this vintage Rolex make it a very special timepiece!
A beautifully elegant slightly off-white dial with matching Yellow gold ‘Dauphine’ hands and Yellow gold pencil hour indices. This simple design is typical of the Rolex style of the late 1940s and early ‘50s and it is beautifully symmetrical and well balanced. The dial perfectly matches the bezel and case, making this perhaps one of the most beautiful Oyster Perpetuals money can buy.
The red ‘OFFICIALLY‘ line variant makes this a rare watch and this is highly sought after among collectors.
This is the original dial which has been restored to the very highest standards by our dial restorers which are considered to be the best in the UK.
The Rolex Oyster, Swiss hallmarked, 18ct Yellow gold case, measures 33.5mm in diameter, not including the original Rolex ‘Super Oyster’ crown. This beautiful ‘Bombé’ design case with beautifully sculpted lugs makes this a very attractive watch case. This watch also has the ‘Super Oyster’ winding crown which has additional seals, negating the need for a screw-down crown. This was used for a period of fewer than three years from 1950 onwards, also adding to the rarity of the watch. The case also has the sought after smooth bezel which just like the rest of the case, is in immaculate condition.
Inside the case-back, all the markings are correct and as expected. Geneva Swiss 18ct hallmarks and 0.0750 18K, with the beautiful, older Rolex scroll and signature; Geneva Swiss Rolex Patented and the model number 6090.
This watch has its original high grade “Officially Certified Chronometer” 18 Jewels, Calibre.645, Super Balance, automatic movement which is well regarded for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong. The movement has a 41-hour power reserve and following its overhaul, service and calibration, is performing strongly and extremely accurately at +4 seconds per day, which is truly outstanding for a watch movement of this age!
The movement is signed Rolex Auto Rotor, Swiss Made Patented Super Balance with the movement reference numbers F31078 and 39644.
This watch movement is now ready for many more years of faithful service and is perfectly suited for daily use and is offered with 12 months warranty on the movement*.
*Please note our 12 months warranty is only applicable if the list price is paid.

This is a truly first class example of a 1953 vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual ‘Bombé’ which is ready to wear and completely practical for everyday use. If treated with care, it will make an excellent investment or heirloom piece and even though vintage gold Rolex prices have risen markedly recently, we still feel good examples such as this are still undervalued. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to expand, prices will continue to climb ever higher.
To summarise, this is a highly collectable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which is ready to wear, use, treasure and enjoy, and provide excellent reliability and a sound financial investment, as long-lasting as the watch itself!
A word on our prices… We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before then restoring them to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are some well-known stores in West London which are highly successful charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.
