The Omega Constellation is an iconic timepiece having been in continuous production since 1952 and has always represented Omega’s most luxurious precision Chronometer timepiece. When launched, and throughout the 1950’s, this was a much more prestigious and expensive product than for example an equivalent Rolex Oyster Perpetual… particularly in Pink Gold.
Description
Pink Gold Omega Constellations Pie Pan wristwatches such as this from the 1950s, are particularly rare, collectable and sought after. Production numbers of Omega Constellations would have been much lower than the equivalent model we see today and Pink gold would have made up just 5 – 10% of production. This 1959 example also has a rare stepped dial, only found on a limited number of Constellations around this period.
The Dial
The ‘Pie Pan’, is so called because it resembles the shape of an upturned pie pan. These are the most sought dial types among Omega collectors. However, this is the rare stepped dial, with the minute track following the outside of the step making this watch particularly sought after. The dial is starburst silver with applied pink gold batons and matching original Dauphine hands.
The dial is signed with an applied pink gold Omega sign and signature. Also ‘Automatic Chronometer Officially Certified” and Constellation with a pink gold star.
This is the original dial which has been restored to the highest standards by our dial restorers which are considered to be the best in the UK.
The Movement
This Omega Chronometer Grade Cal.561, 24 Jewel Automatic Movement was one of Omega’s first full rotor automatics, as opposed to the ‘Bumper’ automatic movement which had been the standard until this point. This movement is held in high regard by Omega aficionados.
The movement has been given a full overhaul, including a service by our watchmaker. The movement carries the serial number 17,211,555 which dates this watch to manufacture in 1959. The full serial number and full particulars of the watch will be detailed on the sales receipt, along with our 12 months warranty and our ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’. *We are very happy to provide a 12 month warranty on this watch.
*Please note – our 12 months’ warranty only included if the list price is paid.
The Case
As mentioned above, Rose Gold Omega Constellations from the 1950’s are particularly rare and this example is in particularly fine condition. The Omega Constellation emblem as seen on the case-back is clear and well defined, indicating the watch has been lightly used. It has only ever been lightly polished and after close inspection, this is all that was required as part of the restoration.
This is an Omega screw-back case and it is of a particularly solid design. Inside the case-back is signed Omega Watch Co with Swiss 18ct Hallmarks and it carries the case reference 14393/4 SC.
The watch is fitted with the correct pink gold period crown.
Although water resistant when new and even though all the seals have been replaced, water resistance has not be tested and is not guaranteed. – Vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.
Strap & Buckle
A new Omega, Brown embossed Crocodile strap has been fitted, along with a pink gold plated Omega buckle. ***If a different colour or style of strap is preferred we will do our best to provide your choice, at no extra charge. If your wrist size is less than 17.cm or more than 22.5cm in circumference, please let us know.
Box and Papers
Although there are are no original papers with this watch, the markings and serial numbers are all correct, dating it to 1959. A detailed Vintage Gold Watches Certificate, detailed written receipt with our 12 months’ warranty and Vintage Gold Watches Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee will all be provided with the watch. The vintage Omega Constellation presentation shown box in the photographs is also included in the sale of this watch.
In Conclusion
This is a superb, early example of the iconic Omega Constellation watch, which is particularly interesting and rare! The movement is of a very high grade and on a par with watches far more expensive than this. Indeed when new, this watch would have cost more than the equivalent Rolex. Omega Constellations watches are highly collectable and the rarity of this watch means the value will always remain strong.
This is a highly collectable vintage gold watch from one of horology’s most famous names, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
A word on our prices – We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before then restoring them to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are some well-known stores in West London which are highly successful charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.
