Description

Here is a rare, previously restored, 9ct vintage Rolex Precision ‘Date’ gentleman’s dress watch in immaculate condition from 1954. Rolex Precisions were seldom produced with a date function and even fewer had the date number alternating between red and black as each day passes. This is referred to as a ‘roulette’ date wheel and is highly sought after by collectors. This, along with a substantial high quality DS&S ‘Shackman’ case makes this watch an outstanding piece, set apart from the usual Rolex Precision range.

The Dial

Beautifully well balanced, the applied gilt 2 – 4 – 6 – 8 -10 dial with alternating red and black date function at 3 and Gilt arrow-head hour markers over a silver dial, is all so typical of the early ’50s. The original ‘Sword’ hour and minutes hands and black sweep seconds hand traverses the dial with style. This is the original dial which has been beautifully restored at some time in the not too distant past.

The Movement

The watch comes with its original high grade Rolex Calibre.1210 17 Jewels movement which as can be seen in the photographs, is in sparkling clean condition. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using original Rolex parts where required, by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. When tested and calibrated on November 5th, it was running incredibly accurately to within 6 seconds per day. This is no exaggeration and is staggering for a vintage watch of this age! The movement is all correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA’, ‘SWISS’, and ‘SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS’, with the Calibre number 1210 and reference number 72217. These movements are strong, accurate and very reliable, making the watch perfectly well suited for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in top condition and with regular servicing every 3 to 4 years, we would fully expect this watch to run very happily for many more decades to come! We are pleased to offer a 12 months warranty on this watch movement*.

The Case

The substantial 9ct solid yellow gold case measures 34mm in diameter, not including the Crown and so this is a large sized Rolex Precision. Inside the case-back, the markings are all correct for a Rolex case made by one of two U.K. case-makers, signed ‘DS & S’ meaning the watch case was made for Rolex by D. Shackman and Son. The case-back also carries London UK 9ct hallmarks, which date this watch to 1954 and the reference number 213. This is a heavier and stronger three piece case than is usual for a Rolex Precision with strong swept back lugs. It is still very elegant and the case, case-back and bezel are all in superb condition with no marks or scratches visible to the naked eye. The watch case has been exceptionally well cared for and so the case has simply required a clean and gentle polish to bring it back to its current ‘like new’ condition. The outside of the case-back has a high polish and has its full thickness, meaning it has never carried an inscription.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new well matched very high quality padded chestnut ‘Lizard’ leather strap with a Rolex gold plated buckle. Please note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge!

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to 1954. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 month warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value, will be provided at the time of sale. A matching Rolex presentation box will also be included in the sale.

In Conclusion

A highly collectible vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!

This is a truly first class example of a rare 1954 vintage Rolex Precision ‘Date’ which is ready to wear and completely practical for everyday use. If treated with care it will make an excellent investment or heirloom piece. Even though vintage gold Rolex prices have risen markedly in the past couple of years, we feel good examples such as this, are still undervalued.   As each year passes and the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to expand, prices are inevitably destined to climb ever higher.
