Description

This is a most elegant gentleman’s 9ct Rolex Precision dress watch from 1965 with rare original hands and dial. The classic Gold Rolex Crown and ‘3 6 9’ over white dial is our favourite design. This is a very clean and well cared for example which has been carefully restored, to bring it back to almost new condition once more. The watch has a 9K solid gold 32mm diameter case (not including the crown), which is in excellent condition. The case is medium sized by the standards of the period and it carries a high grade Cal 1200 manual wind movement which is in fantastic condition.

The Dial

This is the rare white* dial with gold Rolex Crown at 12 o’clock, classic 3, 6 & 9 numerals and gold batons on a creamy white dial with outer minutes markers. The original, original ‘spear’ hands are in excellent condition. The dial is simply signed Rolex and Precision and has a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. This is the original dial which has been restored to exceedingly high standards. *In pure daylight the dial is white, while indoors under artificial light it turns to a creamy white or a butter white, as is shown in the photographs. The lens clean and unmarked..

The Case

This is an elegant solid 9ct gold two piece case which measures 32mm in diameter not including the Rolex crown. The case has been professionally cleaned and lightly polished and is in superb condition. There is little or no evidence of wear and few or no marks visible to the naked eye. Inside case back all the markings are correct and as expected for a Rolex case made in England by A.L.D, Dennison, a British company which made cases gold for many of the best Swiss watch brands selling watches into the UK. The case is marked with the reference numbers 12868 and full Birmingham 1965 hallmarks (4) for 9ct, .375 gold.

The Movement

This is the original high grade 17 Jewels Rolex movement, known for being very accurate, reliable and strong. As can be seen from the photographs it is exceedingly clean and bright condition. In fact it looks completely untouched except for professional servicing. It is marked MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA SWISS and SEVENTEEN JEWELS. The movement has just been serviced and is running perfectly. It winds perfectly, just as it should and is also running strongly. The movement has been calibrated for accuracy and is now ready many more years of reliable service. The movement carries a twelve months warranty and we will be very pleased to arrange further servicing in two to three years time if you wish.

This is the original high grade Cal.1200 Rolex hand wind movement which looks incredibly clean and bright. These 17 Jewels movements are known for being very accurate, reliable and strong and the movement here has just been fully overhauled and serviced and it is running perfectly. It is again correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA’, ‘SWISS’, and ‘SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS’ with serial number 52981 and Cal.1200. The movement is in superb condition and following calibration the watch is keeping good time to within 10 seconds per day. This is a perfectly practical everyday watch and with with regular servicing, every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to run well and give great service for many tears to come! This watch is offered with 12 months warranty on the movement, conditions apply.*

*12 months warranty on the movement is applicable if the above list or ‘Buy It Now’ price is paid. And vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times no matter the original specification or claims that a watch was water-proof when new. We do not test for this and it is not guaranteed.

The Strap & Buckle

A new, very high quality, tan, ‘croc’ leather, padded strap is fitted with a gold plated Rolex buckle. A wide choice of alternative straps is available at no extra charge.

The Box and Papers

There are no original papers with this watch. However the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct and date the watch to 1958. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The watch comes with the high quality hardwood presentation box as shown.

In Conclusion

This beautiful and rare vintage 9ct gold Rolex Precision is in superb condition, and is ready for use and is completely practical and wearable or a great addition to any collection. It is also a great investment, particularly when found in such wonderful condition. It will also, one day, be a great heirloom piece and with the one proviso, it is looked after, ‘a little piece of eternity’….

This is also a highly collectable vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy! And even though vintage gold Rolex prices have moved on recently, we still feel vintage gold Rolex from this period are undervalued. And as each year passes by, the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to grow, meaning prices will climb ever higher.

This totally mint condition vintage Rolex is a rare find and great value considering a new equivalent Rolex 9K dress watch would retail at around £12,000. Further, a vintage 1950s or early 1960s 9K gold Rolex like this one, in this condition, would probably retail at £5,000 to £8,000 in one of the Bond Street stores, or the famous Burlington Arcade in Central London.

From an investment point of view, there is no question which is the better buy.

This 1965 Rolex would also make a wonderful special anniversary or birthday gift.
