Here we have a beautifully restored, 9ct vintage Rolex Precision ‘Oversize’ gentleman’s dress watch in immaculate condition from 1960. Rolex Precisions were made in several sizes, starting at 30mm in diameter, not including the crown. The majority were 32 and 33mm with some 34mm. Very rarely, Rolex or their UK case makers produced 35mm models such as the example we see here. These are highly sought after watches because the seemingly small difference in size is significant and adds to the ‘presence’ of the watch. And white ‘honeycomb’ dial with the popular 3 – 6 – 9 white numerals, make this is a rare and sought after watch, especially when found in such great condition as this.

The Dial

The classic 3 – 6 – 9 white honeycomb dial, with Rolex Crown at 12, is one of our favourite dials, here beautifuly complemented with gilt Dauphine hands and blue centre seconds hand. This is also a ‘honeycomb’ dial meaning the surface is textured with a honeycomb effect which adds to the character and interest of the dial. This is the original dial which has been sympathetically restored to the very highest standards by our dial restorers, who are considered to be the best in the UK and this is as fine an example as you are ever likely to see.

The Movement

The original high grade Rolex Calibre 1215 17 Jewels Precision movement, as can be seen in the photographs, is in sparkling condition. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using original Rolex parts where required by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. When tested and calibrated on 16th November, this watch was running to within 9 seconds per day, which is outstanding for any vintage watch of this age! The movement is all correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA’, ‘SWISS’, and ‘SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS’ and with the Calibre number 1210 and reference 9980. These movements are strong, accurate and very reliable, making the watch is perfectly well suited for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in top condition and with regular servicing every 3 to 4 years, we would fully expect this watch to run very happily for many more decades to come! The Case

The solid 9ct gold case measures 35mm in diameter not including the original crown and so this is an exceptionally large sized Rolex Precision. Inside the case-back, the markings are all correct for a Rolex case made by one of two U.K. case-makers, signed Dennison & Son ‘made in England for Rolex’ along with reference numbers 12847. The case-back also carries Birmingham 9ct hallmarks which dates this watch to 1960. The case, case-back and bezel are all in superb condition with no marks or scratches visible to the naked eye. The watch case has been exceptionally well cared for and so the case has simply required a clean and gentle polish to bring it back to its current ‘like new’ condition.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new well matched very high quality dark brown crocodile skin strap with a Rolex gold plated buckle. Please note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin.

The Box and Papers

Although there is no original paperwork with this watch, the reference numbers, signatures and hallmarks all correct and date the watch to 1960. Detailed particulars are included with the receipt, along with the Warranty*, and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale.
