Here we have a highly elegant, fully restored Vintage Rolex Precision gentleman’s dress watch in 9ct gold from 1965.  At very close to 34mm diameter, this is not quite an oversize watch, but it is quite large for the period. This watch has the classic 1960s Rolex Precision dial with gilt ‘Index’ hands and a blued steel seconds hand which is nicely matched with a dark blue genuine crocodile strap.

The Dial

This is a beautifully clean and well balanced dial, in silver-white, with applied gilt batons and the Rolex ‘Coronet’ at 12. The batons are matched with gilt ‘Index’ hands and a blued steel centre seconds hand. The dial is signed ‘Rolex’ and ‘Precision’ with ‘Swiss’ at the very bottom of the dial below the ‘6’.

This is the original dial which has been sympathetically restored to the very highest standards, by our dial restorers, considered to be the best in the UK.

We have paired the watch with a blue strap to match the seconds hand as we feel it lifts the overall appearance, giving the watch a more contemporary look. However, you are very welcome to ask us to change this if you wish.

The Movement

This is the original high-grade Rolex Calibre 1215, 17 Jewel movement, which as can be seen in the photographs, is in sparkling condition. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using original Rolex parts where required, by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker and when tested and calibrated, this watch was running to within +3  seconds per day, which is outstanding for any vintage watch of this age! When fully wound, this movement has a 58-hour power reserve. The movement is all correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA’, ‘GENEVA SWISS’, and ‘17 Jewels’, with the Calibre number 1215 and the reference number 205. These movements are strong, accurate and very reliable making the watch perfectly appropriate for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in top condition and with regular servicing, every 2 to 3 years we would fully expect this watch to run very happily for many more decades to come! We are therefore pleased to offer a 12-month warranty on this watch movement* and servicing in the future.

*Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the full list price is paid.

The Case

The 9ct yellow gold case measures 33.5mm in diameter, not including the non-signed crown, making this one of the larger Rolex Precisions. The case was made for Rolex by Dennison which was one of two UK case-makers used by Rolex. Inside the case-back, the markings are all correct and as expected. It is signed ‘Rolex’, ‘Made In England’ and ‘A.L.D.’ for Dennison. The case also carries the reference number 12864, in addition to a further reference number 402441 , along with Birmingham UK 9ct hallmarks which date this watch to 1965.

The case, case-back and bezel are all in superb condition with no marks or scratches visible to the naked eye. The watch case has been lightly used and well cared for, and so the case has simply required a clean and gentle polish to bring it back to its current ‘like new’ condition.

Please note – original signed Rolex signed crowns are currently in short supply, but if you would like one fitting we can arrange this for an additional charge of £100.00.

This watch is perfectly practical as an everyday watch, however our standard advice applies: vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.

The Strap & Buckle

A new high quality, blue genuine crocodile strap has been fitted, along with a gold plated Rolex buckle. Please note, we feel the strap matches the watch nicely, but if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin, however we can also obtain most types and colours at short notice.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to 1965.

A detailed ‘Particulars’ document will be included in the sale, along with our detailed receipt and 12 months warranty*. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value of this watch will also be provided at the time of sale, along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If at any time, this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The inner and outer Rolex presentation boxes shown in the photographs will be included with this watch.

In Conclusion

This is a first class example of a highly collectable and highly practical vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy! It will make an excellent evening wear dress watch as well as a practical highly accurate and reliable timepiece to use on an everyday basis.

Vintage gold Rolex Precision watches are highly collected and the rarity of this watch means the value will always remain strong. This watch will also make an excellent investment and family heirloom piece. Even though vintage Rolex prices have risen markedly recently, we feel fine examples such as this still remain undervalued and as each year goes by and the world market for vintage watches expands, availability will become more limited, so prices are surely destined to climb ever higher!

A word about our prices – We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before restoring them to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach inevitably means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are a number of well-known stores in West London which are very successful, charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.

We are happy to accept PayPal as this is the quickest method of payment. However, if you would wish to pay by bank transfer, we will be pleased to pass on a 3% transaction saving to you. Similarly, if you wish to pay by International SWIFT or International Bank Wire Transfer, we will provide you with our BIC / Swift number and our IBAN number.

Please note, we also welcome part exchanges so if you have a watch or small collection for sale, please contact us as we will be happy to discuss this.
