Rolex Precision 9k, 1958, 33mm – Sorry Now Sold – 30th March ’17

Description

Here we have a simply gorgeous, fully restored 9ct vintage Rolex Precision gentleman’s dress watch from 1958. The classic Gold Rolex Crown and ‘3 6 9’ creamy white dial is our favourite design and the small subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock simply adds to the appeal.

This is a very clean and well cared for example which has undergone some light and sympathetic restoration to bring it back to almost new condition once more.

The watch has a solid gold 33mm diameter case (not including the original Rolex crown), which is in excellent condition. The case is mid to large size by the standards of the period. However, given the modern trends for larger and larger watches, this watch would be the equivalent of a small sized gentleman’s watch today, or a large(ish) sized ladies watch. It carries a high grade Rolex Cal 700 hand wound movement which is in amazing, sparkling condition.

The Dial

This is, in our opinion the most elegant Rolex Precision dial with the gold Rolex Crown at 12 o’clock, classic 3, 6 & 9 ‘Arabic’ numerals and a creamy white dial with outer minutes markers. The original gilt ‘leaf’ hands are all in excellent condition. In addition to the Rolex crown, the dial is simply signed Rolex and ‘Shock Resisting’. This is the original dial which has been restored by the best dial restorers in the UK. The lens has been replaced by a new original part.

The Movement

The watch carries its original high grade Rolex calibre 700 Precision movement which as can be seen is in sparkling clean condition. The movement has been completely disassembled by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker and then cleaned, inspected under high magnification and rebuilt using only original Rolex replacement parts where required. His work is amazing and following careful calibration and testing on 10th November, this watch was running within +7 seconds per day. This is truly exceptional for a vintage watch of this age! The movement is all correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA’, ‘SWISS’, and ‘SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS’ with the Calibre number 700. These movements are strong, accurate and very reliable making this watch is perfectly suited for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in A1 condition and with regular servicing, every 3 years, we would fully expect this watch to run happily for many more decades to come! We are therefore pleased to offer a 12 months warranty on this watch movement*.

The Case

The original solid 9ct yellow gold case, bezel and case-back are all in superb condition with no marks or scratches visible to the naked eye. This watch has been lovingly cared for and so the case has simply required careful inspection and cleaning by our Watch Case-Maker and a gentle polish to bring back its current ‘like new’ condition. The outside of the case back is high polished and has never been engraved.

The case measures 33mm in diameter not including the crown and so this was a mid to large sized Rolex Precision when new.

Inside the case-back, all the markings are correct for a Rolex Swiss made case, carrying the Rolex crown and the Rolex reference 9492. The case-back also carries Edinburgh UK 9ct hallmarks which date the watch to 1958.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new high quality padded, blue (genuine) crocodile leather strap, to be with a Rolex gold plated buckle (on back-order). Please note, we have fitted a mid-blue strap just to lift the overall style of the watch a little. As can be seen in our other listings, our usual fit, classic vintage strap, is a brown genuine crocodile strap. However a more formal black crocodile strap looks perfect. For a more modern look, the light brown ostrich leather strap is increasingly popular so if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige,  free of charge.

Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, the numbers and markings are all correct, dating this watch to 1958. A fully detailed written receipt, our 12 months warranty* and our Vintage Gold Watches ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ will be provided on the date of sale. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value, will also be provided and a matching Rolex presentation box will be included in the sale of this watch.
