Here we have a beautifully restored, 18ct vintage Rolex Precision gentleman’s dress watch, large size 34mm from 1954. Rolex Precisions were produced in several sizes in the 1950s, starting at 30mm in diameter, not including the crown, but the majority were 31mm, 32mm and 33mm with some Oversize 34mm. These are highly sought after watches because the seemingly small difference in size does add significantly to the ‘presence’ and value of the watch. In addition, by far the majority of Rolex Precisions are found in 9ct gold in the UK or 10ct or 14ct in the U.S., unlike this watch which has an 18ct case, which again also significantly adds to its value. Finally, the beautiful ‘Honeycomb’ dial on this watch differentiates it from a standard Rolex Precision
This is a superb example of the classic, 1950s Rolex 3, 6, 9, dial. Slightly Off-White with a beautiful honeycomb effect, which catches the light beautifully and adds depth and interest to the dial. The original restored gilt ‘leaf’ hands, which are typical of this period, match the applied batons and 3, 6, 9, and 12, hour indices, This beautifully well-balanced design is often referred to as the ‘Explorer’ style and is one of our most popular. The dial is signed Rolex in black with an applied gold Rolex crown below the number 12 with ‘Precision’ in black above the 6.
This is the original dial which has been sympathetically restored to the very highest standards by the best in the UK.
This is the original high grade Rolex Calibre 1210, 17 Jewels Super Balance movement, which as can be seen in the photographs, is in sparkling condition. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using original Rolex parts where required, by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. When tested and calibrated, this watch was running to within +3 seconds per day, which is outstanding for a vintage watch of this age! When fully wound, this movement also has a 58 hour power reserve. The movement is all correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA’, ‘GENEVA SWISS’, and ‘17 Jewels’, with the Calibre number 1210 and the reference number 78849. These movements are strong, accurate and very reliable making the watch appropriate for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in top condition and with regular servicing, every 2 to 3 years we would fully expect this watch to run very happily for many more decades to come! We are pleased to offer a 12-month warranty on this watch movement* and servicing in the future.
*Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the full list price is paid.
As always, our standard advice applies: Vintage Watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.
The 18ct yellow gold case measures 34mm in diameter, not including the original crown making this one of the rarer, oversize Rolex Precisions. The watch case is in immaculate condition with no scratches, dings or other marks visible to the naked eye. No matter how closely you might wish to examine the case, it shows no signs of anything other than very light and careful limited use. On the outside of the case-back can be found the early Rolex signature crown and inside the case-back, the markings are all correct for the Rolex Swiss made case with the early Rolex signature crown and scroll. The case-back also carries the Rolex model reference numbers 959 and 8961 and Geneva Swiss 18ct hallmarks. This watch case has been exceptionally well cared for and has therefore simply required a clean and gentle polish to bring it back to its current almost like new condition.
The Strap & Buckle
A new high quality, Brown ‘Croc’ leather strap has been fitted, along with a gold plated Omega buckle. Please note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most types and colours at short notice.
The Box and Papers
Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to between 1954.

We love to find and make available vintage gold Rolex watches of this quality and condition! This is a superb, highly collectable and usable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy! It will make an excellent evening wear dress watch as well as a practical, highly accurate and reliable timepiece to use on an everyday basis.
Vintage gold Rolex Precision watches are highly collected and the rarity of this watch means the value will always remain strong.
This watch will also make an excellent investment and family heirloom piece. Even though vintage Omega prices have risen markedly recently, we feel fine examples such as this still remain undervalued. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage watches expands, availability will become more limited, so prices are surely destined to climb ever higher!
A word about our prices – We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before restoring them to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach inevitably means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are a number of well-known stores in West London which are very successful, charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.
