Here we have an absolutely delightful 18ct yellow gold Rolex Precision dress watch from 1953, with an unusual and very attractive Silver dial. The applied gilt pyramid and dagger hour indices are matched with the original ‘Alpha’ style hands and are all in tip-top condition. Please note, although the diameter of this watch, at 31mm, was considered a quite normal size for a gentleman’s dress watch in the 1950s, this watch is perhaps more suitable as a ladies watch today.

The Dial

The Silver dial is unusual, in having a combination of ‘pyramid’ and ‘dagger’ style applied gilt hour indices which are matched by the original ‘Alpha’ style hands. The applied 12 at the top and Rolex Coronet below completes this dial which has wonderful symmetry. The Silver dial contrasts beautifully with the hands and hour indices and 18ct yellow gold case. This particular dial, with the rarer 18ct case, elevates this to quite an exclusive example.

The dial has been previously restored to a high standard and all we have found necessary is to give it a very gentle clean to remove any dust and light marks.

The Case

The 18ct yellow gold Rolex Swiss made case measures 31mm in diameter, excluding the correct Rolex ‘nipple’ crown. This was a normal size  gent’s watch in 1953 as watches were generally smaller. However, we sell many more of these watches to ladies and so this could rightfully be referred to as a ladies / unisex watch today.

The case has an attractive integral stepped bezel making this a two-piece design, with the beautiful early rounded press fit case- back. The case has been professionally cleaned, inspected and lightly hand-polished and is in excellent condition, having been very well cared for with no significant scratches or wear visible to the naked eye. The press fit case-back clicks into place very satisfyingly and it is of full thickness and has never been inscribed.

The inside of the case-back shows the correct early 50’s Rolex coronet and scroll signature and Geneva Swiss 18ct gold hallmarks, along with the Rolex model number for this watch 8144.

Please note, our standard advice applies: Vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.

The Movement

The high grade Calibre 710, 17 Jewel hand-wound movement is incredibly clean and in sparkling condition. It has just been fully overhauled and serviced by our expert vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. These Rolex Cal.710 movements are highly regarded for their accuracy and reliability and this movement is running perfectly, having been calibrated to run consistently at – 2 seconds per day! This is no exaggeration – We have checked the test results on our electronic watch timegrapher. This movement also has an excellent power reserve of 48 hours when fully wound.

The movement is signed Rolex, Swiss Made and 17 Rubies (Jewels) and is marked with the Calibre number 710 and the reference number 85126. This particular movement is in superb condition and with regular servicing, say every 2-3 years, we would fully expect this watch to run quite happily for another 60+ years! We are therefore very confident in offering this watch with a 12 month written warranty*.

Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the list price is paid.

Strap and Buckle

A high quality, new Tan Ostrich leather strap has been fitted with a gold plated Rolex buckle. However, if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock, in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most types and colours from our partners at ‘Watch Obsession’ within 48hrs. Please take a look at their huge range of 16mm straps if you wish here.

Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with the watch, the numbers and markings are all correct, dating this watch to 1953. A detailed written receipt with 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’, which states: “If this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The Rolex presentation box shown in the accompanying photograph is included in the sale.

In Conclusion

This is a superb, highly collectable and usable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy! It will make an excellent dress watch as well as a practical, accurate and reliable timepiece to use on an everyday basis.

A word on our prices – We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before then restoring these to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are some well known stores in West London which are highly successful charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.
