Here we have a beautifully restored, 18ct vintage Rolex Precision ‘Oversize’ gentleman’s dress watch in immaculate condition from 1951. Rolex Precisions were produced in several sizes in the 1950s, starting at 30mm in diameter, not including the crown. The majority were 32 and 33mm with some 34mm. Very rarely, Rolex or their UK case makers produced 35mm models or even rarer 36mm such as the example we see here. These are highly sought after watches because the seemingly small difference in size, does add significantly to the ‘presence’ and value of the watch. And a silver white dial with the popular 1 – 12 arabic raised gold numerals, also adds to the desirability of the watch, especially when found in such great condition as this. In addition, by far the majority of Rolex Precisions are found in 9ct gold in the UK or 10ct or 14ct in the U.S., unlike this watch which has an 18ct case, which again also significantly adding to its value.

The Dial

The wonderful original classic silver white dial with raised gold 1 – 12 arabic numerals is one of our most sought after dial designs. The original early 1950s ‘Leaf’ hands and blued steel centre seconds, completes the unmistakable early ’50s look and charm of this watch. This is the original dial which has been sympathetically restored to the very highest standards by our dial restorers, which are considered to be the best in the UK, making this is as fine an example as you are ever likely to see.

The Movement

This is the original high grade Rolex Calibre 710, 17 Jewels Super Balance movement, which as can be seen in the photographs, is in sparkling condition. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using original Rolex parts where required by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. When tested and calibrated on 26th January following its restoration, this watch was running to within +8 seconds per day, which is outstanding for a vintage watch of this age! The movement is all correctly signed ‘ROLEX PRECISION’, ‘SWISS MADE’, and ‘17 RUBIES’ and with the Calibre number 710. These movements are strong, accurate and very reliable making the watch appropriate for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in top condition and with regular servicing, every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to run very happily for many more decades to come! The Case

The substantial 18ct gold wide bezel case measures 36mm in diameter, not including the original crown and so this is one of the very rare, largest sized Rolex Precisions. The watch case is in immaculate condition and even the rounded case back looks unused! No matter how closely you might wish to examine the case it shows no signs of anything other than very light and careful limited use. Inside the case-back the markings are all correct for the Rolex case made by one of two U.K. case-makers, signed Dennison & Son ‘made in England for Rolex’ along with reference numbers 13874 and 385852 and with Birmingham UK 18ct hallmarks which date this watch to 1951. Again, it is very rare to find Rolex Precision made in 18ct gold by Dennison UK. So rare in fact that we can’t remember the last time we saw one! This watch case has been exceptionally well cared for therefore the case has simply required a clean and gentle polish to bring it back to its current ‘like new’ condition.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new well matched very high quality dark brown crocodile skin strap with a Rolex gold plated buckle. Please note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most type and colours at short notice.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to 1951. A fully detailed written receipt, with a 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value, will be provided at the time of sale.  The matching Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs will be included in the sale.

This is a truly first class example of a 1951 vintage Rolex Precision ‘Oversize’ 36mm which is ready to wear and appropriate for every day use.
