Description
Very occasionally during the 1950s, Rolex played with the idea of alternating red and black date numerals in the date window such as the rarely found example we have here. This is commonly known as the Oyster Perpetual Date, Roulette for fairly obvious reasons. These are rarely found on the open market as they are highly prized by collectors. This watch also benefits from a superbly restored champagne dial which we feel suits the solid 18ct yellow gold case beautifully. This is Rolex model ref. 6534 with the Chronometer Grade Calibre 1035 automatic movement. Finally this is one of the last ‘Semi Bubble Backs’ (see details below). And so each of these features makes this watch particularly collectable and sought after.
The Dial
The original champagne dial is rare for the period and has been superbly restored, bringing it back to ‘as new’ condition. It carries the signature ‘Rolex Crown’ at 12 o’clock and ‘Stick’ baton hour markers around the dial which has also become a classic motif. The fabulous champagne dial appears as a light straw colour, or very slight pink, or indeed white, depending on the ambient light.
The Case
This original Rolex Geneva hallmarked 18K solid yellow gold case measures 35mm diameter not including the Rolex Oyster screw down crown. This watch has one of the last ‘Semi Bubble Backs’, so called due to the depth of the case back to accommodate the large Cal.1035 automatic movement. The case has been expertly cleaned and polished and is in immaculate condition. Inside the case-back are all the correct markings including two Swiss 18ct hallmarks and 0.0750 18K with ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA SWITZERLAND’ and the model number 6534 .
The Movement
The original high grade “Officially Certified Superlative Chronometer” 25 Jewels, 1030 calibre ‘butterfly’ movement is very highly regarded for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong. Here, it is in sparkling condition and it is working perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. This movement is known as a ‘butterfly’ movement because the lightened rotor resembles a butterfly wing. It is signed MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA and TWENTY FIVE JEWELS, ADJUSTED FIVE POSITIONS. The movement carries the movement reference number and the Calibre number 1035. The movement has been very carefully calibrated and it is running strongly and accurately within 15 seconds per day, which is excellent for a watch movement of this age. This watch movement is now ready for many more years faithful service and it is perfected suited for every day use. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement*.
Strap and Buckle
A new very high quality conker ‘croc’ leather strap is fitted with a matching gold plated buckle. However, if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to provide one free of charge.
The Box and Papers
Original paperwork for a watch of this age is very rare and although there is none with this watch, the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct, dating it to 1956. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 month warranty* and a separate insurance valuation with the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale.
In Conclusion
This is a beautiful example of an iconic vintage watch from horology’s most famous name and if treated with care it will become an excellent investment as well as something for you to treasure and enjoy. Even though vintage Rolex prices have risen considerably in recent years, we still feel good examples such as this are undervalued and as the world market for vintage Rolex continues to expand, this means prices are likely to climb ever higher.
