Description  – vgw ref R206

Here we have a beautiful, fully restored Rolex Oyster Perpetual 18K Automatic, Bubble-Back, from 1953. This watch has been pampered, i.e. very well cared for and is in wonderful condition. It has its original and rare Guilloché (vertical cut) dial which has been superbly restored. The high grade Cal.645, Certified Chronometer Grade (highly accurate and highly reliable) automatic movement has been fully restored using only original parts as required. The 34mm Bubble-Back case with a Super Oyster crown has been carefully and lightly polished just enough to bring it back to top original condition. This model the 6084, is the same as worn by Sir Edmond Hillary when in 1953, he and Tenzing Norgay successfully climbed Everest for the first time. During which, the watch performed faultlessly.

The Dial

This beautiful, simple and elegant dial design is Rolex at it’s best and could easily pass for a contemporary ‘Heritage’ design. The gold Dauphine hands, needle seconds hand and guilt arrowhead hour markers and Rolex Crown at 12 o’clock are all classic Rolex 1950s motifs. The dial is signed Rolex (the brand), Oyster (denoting the waterproof case), and Perpetual (denoting the automatic movement). The dial is also signed ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ indicating the movement qualified as ‘Chronometer’ grade, i.e. highly accurate and highly reliable by COSC the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute. This watch is particularly special due to it’s Guilloché (vertical cut) dial which is a distinctive feature of this watch. It catches the light wonderfully, – depending on the source and direction it changes colour slightly between silver and white.

The Case

This original Rolex, Swiss hallmarked 18K solid gold case, measures 34mm in diameter not including the original Rolex Super Oyster crown. The case, case-back and bezel are all in superb condition with no marks or scratches visible to the naked eye. The bezel is the sought after smooth type and with the simple non-date dial, it gives the watch an elegant and understated look. The screw down  case-back and the sealed ‘Super Oyster’ crown effectively made the watch impervious to water and dust when new.*  Inside, the case-back is marked 0.750 18K, along with two Swiss 18ct hallmarks and the beautiful older Rolex scroll: GENEVA R SWISS ROLEX PATENTED along with the model number: 6084.

*Note vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.

The Movement

This is the original high grade “Officially Certified Chronometer” 20 Jewels, Calibre.645 movement which is highly regarded for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong.  It is signed ROLEX PERPETUAL CHRONOMETER and SWISS MADE. The movement is working perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service by our watchmaker. It carries the correct movement numbers F661xx and 083xx. The movement has been calibrated and timed and is running strongly and accurately at ± 15 seconds per day and is now ready for many more years of reliable service. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement*. *Please note, the warranty is only applicable if the ‘Buy It Now’ price is paid.

The Strap and Buckle

The watch is fitted with a very high quality, part-used original Rolex dark brown, soft crocodile leather strap. The strap is fitted with a matching Rolex gold plated buckle. Please note, if a different colour or different style strap is preferred please let us know and we will do our best to oblige one free of charge.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct, dating the watch to 1953. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale.

*Note 12 months warranty is only applicable if the full list price is paid.

In Conclusion
