Omega Watches

Since the company was founded in 1848, Omega pioneered a huge range of innovations. Britain’s Royal Flying Corps chose Omega watches in 1917 as official timekeepers for its pilots. Again in 1940, RAF Pilots watches were supplied by Omega. The 40s also saw the first tourbillon wristwatch and the first of the famous Seamaster watches, whilst the 50s and 60s introduced the legendary Constellation, Speedmaster, Seamaster 300 and Railmaster. Over these years, everyone from John F Kennedy to Elvis wore Omega watches on official duties. What’s more, in 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra took his Omega Speedmaster to space on NASA’s Mercury Sigma 7 mission, and in 1969 two Speedmasters landed on the moon, worn by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Here we have a very rare example of an early 18ct pink gold Omega Seamaster Calendar gent’s dress watch from 1954. The Omega Seamaster was first released in 1948 and has remained in production ever since. In addition to the rarity of being made in 18ct pink gold, this early Seamaster is also notable for its original Honeycomb dial which is in absolutely first class condition.  As can be seen, Omega also experimented with the unusual positioning of the date window at 6 o’clock during this period.

The Dial

This original, unrestored, honeycomb, 3, 6, 9, 12 ‘Explorer’ type dial is in amazingly good condition with no signs of ageing visible to the naked eye. The applied gold arrow head hour makers and gold numerals are all in equally good condition, as are the original Dauphine hands. The Explorer dial design, is one of our favourites and is so called because the dial looks like a compass! The dial is completely original and untouched.

The Case

It is immediately apparent this Omega Swiss made 18ct solid gold case, is designed for strength! The wide bezel and the substantial lugs and depth of the case, all give the watch a particularly robust appearance. As with all earlier Seamasters, there is no emblem on the case-back. The inside of the case-back caries all the correct Swiss Geneva 18ct hallmarks, and is signed ‘Omega Watch Co’, ‘Fab Suisse’ with the model number 2757, and case reference number 11,337,xxx. This case is very clean and crisp and shows no signs of wear with no dings or scratches visible to the naked eye. This all indicates the watch has seen very light and careful use.

* Water resistance has not been tested and is not guaranteed – Vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times!

The Movement

The original high grade, cal.355 17 Jewels Bumper automatic movement, uses a rotor which arcs between two ‘bumper’ springs which wind the watch as you move. This was a standard design perfected by Omega at the time and was in common use with other manufacturers including Jaeger-LeCoultre and Zenith. When the watch is moved, one can very gently feel the rotor bouncing between its two bumper springs.

The movement has been given a full overhaul including a service by our watchmaker. The movement carries the serial number 14,276,xxx which dates this watch to 1954. The full serial number and full particulars of the watch will be detailed on the sales receipt, along with our 12 months warranty and our ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’. *We are happy to provide a 12 month warranty on this watch.

The Strap & Buckle

A new high quality, brown lizard skin strap has been fitted, along with a pink gold plated Omega buckle. Please note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most types and colours at short notice.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to 1954.

Our detailed ‘Particulars’ document will be included in the sale, along with our detailed receipt and 12 months Warranty*. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value of this watch will also be provided at the time of sale along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The presentation box shown in the photographs will be included with this watch. However, if this is not required, we will be able to reduce the price of the watch by quite a few £s. Please enquire.

In Conclusion

This is a superb, early example of the iconic Omega Seamaster watch, which is particularly interesting and rare!  The movement is of a very high grade and on a par with watches far more expensive than this. Indeed when new, this watch would have cost more than the equivalent Rolex. Omega Seamaster watches are highly collectible and the rarity of this watch means the value will always remain strong.

A word on our prices… We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before then restoring them to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are some well known stores in West London which are highly successful charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.

We are happy to accept Paypal as this is the quickest method of payment. However if you would like to pay by UK cheque or by UK bank transfer we will be pleased to assist you with this and pass on a 3% saving to you. Similarly if you wish to pay by International SWIFT or Bank Wire Transfer we will provide you our BIC / Swift number and our IBAN number.

*Note – 12 Month warranty only included if the list price is paid.
