The Omega Constellation is an iconic timepiece having been in continuous production since 1952 and has always represented Omega’s most luxurious precision chronometer timepiece. When launched, and throughout the 1950’s, this was a much more prestigious and expensive product than for example an equivalent Rolex Oyster Perpetual… particularly in Rose Gold.
Newly Available June 9th– Information currently being added. If you have an interest in this watch, please contact us to discuss or to reserve it – asap!
Description
Rose Gold Omega Constellations such as this from the 1950s, are particularly rare, especially when found in such superb condition as this. Production numbers of Omega Constellations would have been much lower than the equivalent model we see today and rose gold would have made up just 5 – 10% of production. At 35mm, this an uncommonly large Omega Constellation for the period, as most were 34mm.
The Dial
The Cross-Hair white dial is an early version of the ‘Pie Pan’, so called because it resembles the shape of an up-turned pie pan. In some later Omega Constellations references, this became much more pronounced and these have become very popular amongst collectors.
The dial is in what we define as being in “top original condition”. By this, we mean that only under high magnification can some slightest signs of ageing be found. It is far too good to restore and so we have left it completely alone. This is remarkable for a watch of this age!
The Movement
This Omega Calibre 505, 20 Jewels, Chronometer grade movement was one of Omega’s first full rotor automatics, as opposed to the ‘Bumper’ automatic movement which had been the standard until this point.
The movement has been given a full overhaul, including a service by our watchmaker. The movement carries the serial number 15,765,xxx which dates this watch to manufacture in 1957. The full serial number and full particulars of the watch will be detailed on the sales receipt, along with our 12 months warranty and our ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’. *We are very happy to provide a 12 month warranty on this watch.
*Note – 12 month warranty only included if the list price is paid.
The Case
As mentioned above, Rose Gold Omega Constellations from the 1950’s are particularly rare and this example is in particularly fine condition. The Omega Constellation emblem as seen on the case-back is clear and crisp and unworn, indicating the watch has been used very sparingly. It has only ever been lightly polished and after proper inspection, this is all that was required as part of the restoration.
This is an Omega PGF ‘Flying Eagle’ French made case, for Omega and it is of a particularly solid design. The case carries external French 18ct hallmarks. Inside the case-back carries the case reference 405775.
Although water resistant when new and even though all the seals have been replaced, water resistance has not be tested and is not guaranteed. – Vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.
Strap & Buckle
A new Omega, brown crocodile skin strap has been fitted, along with a gold plated Omega buckle. ***If a different colour or style of strap is preferred we will do our best to provide your choice, at no extra charge. If your wrist size is less than 17.cm or more than 22.5cm in circumference, please let us know.
Box and Papers
Although there are are no original papers with this watch, the markings and serial numbers are all correct, dating it to 1957. A detailed Vintage Gold Watches Certificate, detailed written receipt with our 12 months warranty and Vintage Gold Watches Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee will all be provided with the watch. The vintage Omega presentation box in the photographs, is also included in the sale of this watch.
In Conclusion
This is a superb, early example of the iconic Omega Constellation watch, which is particularly interesting and rare! The movement is of a very high grade and on a par with watches far more expensive than this. Indeed when new, this watch would have cost more than the equivalent Rolex. Omega Constellations watches are highly collectible and the rarity of this watch means the value will always remain strong.
*Note – 12 month warranty only included if the list price is paid.
