Description

The Omega story began in 1848 at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, when its founder Louis Brandt at the age of 23 opened a comptoir d’établissage, a sub-contracting sales office for watch manufacture.. In 1880, due to the greater supply of manpower, communications and energy, Louis-Paul and Cesar Brandt moved into a small factory in the city of Bienne /Biel. With the introduction of their first series-produced calibers, Labrador and Gurzelen, in 1895 the watches achieved a precision of within 30 seconds a day.

Four years later, Louis Brandt & Fils became the largest producers of watches in Switzerland, with a production rate of 240,000 watches produced annually and employing 800 people. But this fact did not stop the exclusivity of the watches they produced: a clear example is the minute-repeating wristwatch, developed in 1892 in partnership with Audemars Piguet, and probably the first wristwatch of its kind. The famous Omega caliber became a brilliant market performer when it went into production in 1894. Its major points for salability were in its easily interchangeable parts, and its simplicity of construction. The company’s banker, Henri Rieckel, suggested the name “Omega” for the new watch. The overwhelming success of the “Omega” name led to it being adopted as the sole name for all the watches of the company from 1903.

Today, seven out of ten people throughout the world are familiar with the Omega watch brand – a truly amazing rate of awareness to which few other watch brands can lay claim. Not to mention the watch worn on the first walk on the moon!

Here we have a very attractive, Large 18ct Rose Gold , Cross Hair,  Omega Gent’s Dress Watch, in wonderful fully restored condition. A notable rare feature being the Red Cross Hair Dial and matching Red Arrow Seconds Hand!

The Movement

The Omega copper-toned Calibre 285 movement here, looks spectacularly pristine and our watchmaker has commented that this particular movement has been very lightly used and very well cared for. It is marked – 17 jewels – and with serial number 17.888,532 which dates the watch to 1960. The movement winds, runs & sets smoothly and is in superb working order and keeping excellent time.

This watch has been fully overhauled and serviced by our vintage Omega specialist watchmaker and is calibrated to run arrow straight within + 8 second / day!  This is no exaggeration.  We have seen the test results from an electronic watch test instrument and in its half wound state this watch is running accurately within 5 seconds per day!. We are therefore more than happy to offer a 12 months warranty on the movement of this watch*.

The Dial

This watch is unusual in having a striking red cross hairs dial, complimented by red arrow head seconds hand it looks fabulous with the 18ct rose gold case! This is the original dial which has been restored by our Dial Restorers who are one of the best, if not the best in the U.K..  Original Dauphine hands complete the dial.

The Case

The large Rose Gold case measures 36mm in diameter not including the period crown. It is in immaculate condition with no dings or scratches visible to the naked eye. Rose gold Omegas from this period and in this condition are very rare and hard to find!

The watch is fitted with an Omega ‘Croc’ leather strap with an Omega gold plated buckle. Please note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown burgundy and black in stock, in plain padded leather, alligator, crocodile skin or lizard skin.

The Box and Papers

Although there is no original paperwork with this watch, the reference numbers, markings, signatures and hallmarks all correct and date the watch to 1960.

This watch also comes complete with its original Omega presentation box.

Detailed particulars are included with the receipt, along with our 12 months Warranty*.  A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale.
