Longines is one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers with an unparalleled history of invention, innovation, patents and awards. They are also responsible for some of the most beautiful watches ever made. Here we have a wonderful example from 1956 when technically, Longines were competing head to head and beating almost all the Swiss watch manufacturers.

This is a classic Longines manual-wind dress watch with a subsidiary seconds dial, in solid 18ct pink gold. This watch has previously been restored to a high standard so we have simply given the watch a full inspection and service and fitted a new Crocodile Leather strap.

The Dial

The beautiful dial is Silver with pink gold hands and numerals / hour markers and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. The dial has previously been restored to a high standard and the hands and hour markers are showing a gentle patina / ageing which adds to the charm and style of this watch.

The Movement

The 17 Jewel, Calibre 27 movement is in sparkling condition and has obviously been very well cared for and never exposed to water or dampness. Our watchmaker has fully inspected and serviced the movement and we have no hesitation in offering a full 12 months’ warranty on this watch*. The watch was tested following the service 1n April 2018 and was running within +10 secs/day which is truly excellent for a watch of this period. The movement is signed ‘Longines 17 Jewels Swiss’ with the serial number 10,141,xxx and the Calibre No. 27. The serial number firmly dates this watch to 1956.

* Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the list price is paid.

The Case

The substantial 18ct solid pink gold case measures 35mm, not including the original Longines crown. The case is in superb condition and the rounded case-back is particularly impressive, showing no dents, scratches or any other damage, visible to the naked eye.

The Strap & Buckle

A good quality Dark Brown Crocodile leather strap is fitted with a plain gold plated buckle. If a different colour or style of strap is preferred we will do our best to oblige, free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock, in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most types and colours from our partners at ‘Watch Obsession’ within 48hrs.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with the watch, the numbers and markings are all correct, dating this watch to 1956. A detailed written receipt with 12 months’ warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The watch will be supplied in a new high quality presentation box. If a matching vintage Longines box is required we can supply one with this watch, at the price we have paid for the box. We usually have at least one or two in stock and we will send you photographs of these if requested.

In Conclusion

We have always admired vintage Longines and have never been able to understand why they have been so overlooked for so long. Technically these watches hold their own and are often superior to much more famous brands such as say, for example, Rolex! Whatever the reasons, they represent amazingly good value just now, considering the quality and excellent pedigree. However, we recommend you to be quick as we have seen prices of vintage Longines bouncing back over the past 2 – 3 years.

This is a desirable and highly collectable vintage gold watch from one of horology’s most respected names and one which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as be something to treasure and enjoy!
