It’s not so well known that Rolex was actually founded in the U.K in London in 1905 and it was not until 1919 that the company transferred its base of operations to Geneva, Switzerland. The company’s founders Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis simply used their initials W&D until around 1910, when they began to use the name Rolex.

Here we have a superb example of a Rolex Ladies Cocktail Watch with its original bracelet in 9ct pink gold from 1932. This is an early Rolex watch from the same company we know and love today, namely Montres Rolex S.A. which first became established in Geneva in 1919.

This beautiful watch is fully Rolex signed on the case, movement and dial. It is on its original 9ct signed bracelet which has been re-sprung. This bracelet, although expandable, is really only suitable for a smaller size wrist, as it has had one or two links removed.

The Case

The original, hinged tonneau-style case has beautiful hand-engraving work to the sides and remains in tip-top condition. As one would expect, this is a high quality case, which from all appearances, seems to have been very well cared for since there are no scratches, dings or other signs of damage visible to the naked eye. The case is signed ‘Rolex’, ’27 Records Universels’, ‘Geneve’, ‘Suisse’ and  and carries Glasgow U.K hallmarks which date the watch to 1932. The case also carries the Rolex model reference number 1851, and the case serial number 0639907. The Rolex Coronet appears on the outside of the case-back and is an indication this watch has only seen light use and has not been over-polished. The width of the case is 17mm, excluding the crown and 31mm in length including the lugs. The watch is quite slim for the period at 7mm, including the lens which stands slightly proud of the dial. The case and hinge area in particular, have been carefully inspected for any weaknesses and there were none found, therefore we can guarantee the structural integrity of this watch case.

The Dial

The Guilloche effect ivory cream dial carries 1 – 12 numerals in the art-deco style, complemented by beautiful original ‘Lozenge’ style blued steel hands. This is the original dial, which has been restored to the highest standards by our dial restorers who are considered to be the best in the UK.

The Movement

The Rolex Prima Calibre.250, 15 Jewels movement is original to this watch. It is an advanced version, being timed in 6 positions as part of its design and assembly and is signed ‘Rolex’, ‘Prima’, ’15 Rubies’ and ‘Swiss Made’. The watch movement has been fully overhauled and serviced by our watchmaker who reports it to be in excellent condition. We are therefore happy to offer this watch with our 12 months warranty*. Please note – although Rolex watches of this period have reliable and accurate movements (for the period), they do need to be treated with some care, so while this watch is perfectly suited for evening wear and special occasions, it will not be so suitable for everyday use.

*Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the full list price is paid.

The Bracelet

The watch is complete with its original expandable 9ct pink gold bracelet. The bracelet is will be most suitable for a lady with a smaller wrist size in the region of 15.5 cm to 17cm.

The Box and Papers

Although there is no original paperwork with this watch, the reference numbers, markings, signatures and hallmarks are all correct, dating the watch to 1932. A detailed ‘Particulars’ document will be included in the sale, along with our detailed receipt and 12 months warranty*. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value of this watch will also be provided at the time of sale, along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If at any time, this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The watch comes complete with a Green Suede Rolex Pouch, as shown.

In Conclusion

A rare, useable ladies evening wear dress watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide both an excellent financial investment as well as something of beauty to use, treasure and enjoy! It will make an excellent investment or family heirloom piece and even though vintage gold Rolex prices have continued to rise markedly in the past 2-3 years, we still feel fine examples such as this are still undervalued. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to expand, prices are surely destined to climb ever higher!
