Description
It is a little known fact that Jaeger-LeCoultre, in addition to producing movements for its own watches, has also produced movements for a number of famous watch houses such as Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, IWC and in the early part of the 20th Century, Jaeger-LeCoultre even supplied bare movements to the great firm of Patek Philippe. Then as now, Jaeger-LeCoultre was considered one of the finest watchmakers in Switzerland.
Here we have a particularly beautiful example of a gentleman’s 1960’s, 18ct dress watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre in all original and lightly restored condition. The dial is original and unrestored, having had a very gentle spring clean by blowing and dusting only. The case is in mint condition having had a very gentle and sympathetic clean and polish and the movement has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and serviced and is now running strongly and accurately.
The Case
18 carat solid yellow gold, in excellent condition, measuring approximately 34mm in diameter, not including the crown. Inside the case-back is properly hallmarked “18K 0.750″ and signed ” LeCoultre Co” “SWISS”. The watch has obviously been very well cared for as there are no dings, scratches or marks visible to the naked eye. Vintage watches should never be assumed to be water-proof and should be kept clean and dry at all times.
The Dial
The original dial is in superb original unrestored condition, in period lemon cream, signed Jaeger-LeCoultre and “Swiss Made”. Applied gilt batons mark the hours, along with the beautiful original guilt ‘stick’ hands all in perfect condition. The overall look is one of originality, simplicity and elegance. The lens is clear having recently been replaced.
The Movement
This is the all original high quality 17 jewelled, Cal 886 hand wind movement signed Jaeger-LeCoultre Co and ‘Fab Suisse’, Cal.886 and serial number 1776960 making the year of manufacture 1966. It has just been serviced and it is running strongly and keeping accurate time, within plus or minus 10 seconds per day, which is well within expected parameters. The watch has a runtime of 51 hours from its fully wound state which shows the movement is particularly strong running and again, well within expected parameters.
The Strap
High quality brown croc grain padded ZRC composite leather strap which is very stylish and matches the watch perfectly. However if you have a preference for another colour or style of strap we will do our best to oblige without any extra cost.
Box and Papers
Although there are no original papers with this watch, a detailed written receipt, and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The numbers on this watch match and date this watch to 1966 and will be quoted on your receipt for your security. The watch comes with a rare original vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre presentation box as shown in the photographs. Please note the original vintage presentation box is not original to this particular watch but it is a good match. The watch is sold on 14 days no quibble sale or return and with 12 months warranty.*
In Conclusion
This exactly the kind of watch we love to find, bring back to life, and offer here for sale. It’s many more times more stylish than a modern watch and even though it is now a half century old, it is still completely practical to wear as your daily watch – a thing of beauty, from one of the most prestigious names in Swiss watch-making. This particular example in this condition, will also make an excellent investment and heirloom piece, as well as something to treasure and enjoy and as each year goes by and the world market for vintage gold watches grows ever greater, limited supply and high demand from the Far East, means prices will climb ever higher!
