Description
The extremely rare and highly collectable oversize Rolex Precision ‘Coin Edge’ is yet another classic, highly stylish 1950’s Rolex which remains elegant and contemporary today. This is a very clean and well cared for example which has undergone some light and sympathetic restoration, to bring it back to almost new condition once agian.
This watch has the 9K solid gold 34mm diameter case (not including the original Rolex crown), which is in excellent condition. The case is regarded as ‘oversize’ or very large by the standards of the day. It carries its original high grade Cal 1210 hand wind movement with centre seconds hand and classical creamy white original dial which has be expertly refinished.
The Dial
Very fresh gold Rolex Crown at 12 o’clock, with gold daggers with arrow heads at 3, 6 & 9 on a creamy white dial with outer minutes markers. The original black lined gold hands and black needle seconds hand all look as new. The gold details ensures the dial is very easy to read in low light as we have tried to show in some of the photographs. In addition to the Rolex crown, the dial is signed Rolex and Precision. This is the original dial which has been restored to ‘as new condition’ completed to the very highest standard.
The Case
This is the fantastic and extremely rare ‘coin edge’ 9K heavy gold case which is still crisp, sharp and unworn. At 34mm diameter this was definitely a ‘dress to impress’ watch in its day and definitely one of the most expensive Rolex Precisions.
Professionally cleaned and lightly polished the solid 9ct solid yellow gold case is in superb condition. There is little or no evidence of wear and no marks visible to the naked eye.
Inside caseback all the markings are correct and as expected : (UK case maker D Shakman & Sons ) DS&S (Model No) 09985 with the correct UK double hallmarks for 9ct, .375 gold.
The Movement
Inside the case, the original high grade Cal 1210 Rolex hand wind movement sparkles like new. It has just been serviced and is running perfectly. It is again correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA’, ‘SWISS’, and ‘SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS’. This movement carries the serial number N362XXX dating the watch to 1958. These movements are very strong and reliable! This particular movement again looks incredibly clean and with regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to run very happily for many years to come! *The watch is offered with 12 months warranty if the full list price is paid.
The Strap & Buckle
A very high quality, new ‘croc’ leather, padded strap is fitted with an aftermarket gold plated Rolex buckle.
The Box and Papers
There are no original papers with this watch. However the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct and date the watch to 1958. A detailed written receipt, with 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale.
**The genuine vintage Rolex box shown in the accompanying photographs is included in the sale, provided the ‘Buy It Now’ price is paid.
In Conclusion
This rare gentleman’s Rolex Coin Edge Precision in 9ct gold was close to the top of the ‘Precision’ range when new. Few were made making it highly collectable, particularly when found in such good condition. And even though gold Rolex prices have moved on a little recently, we still feel gold Rolex from this period are undervalued. And as every year goes by the world market for vintage Swiss gold watches grows almost exponentially and so the law of supply and demand mean prices climb ever higher.
This, therefore is an extremely desirable and highly collectable vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
The watch here is offered at a very competitive price taking into account the model, the rarity, the condition and extras. If you can find something similar for sale in the UK please let us know as we will be very interested to take a look and we promise to let you have our comments. Indeed, the same vintage gold watch offered for sale on Bond Street or in The Burlington Arcade in Central London would command twice the price.
Please note *The watch is offered with 12 months warranty if the full list price is paid.
