Description
Of all the vintage Rolex this has to be one of our favourites. 1953, Oyster Perpetual, with 14K case, Bombay sculptured lugs and the early 1950s period ‘Crown, Hearts and Arrows’, Gold dial. All simply wonderful and a combination which one can never tire of. This is perhaps the most elegant vintage gentleman’s Rolex dress watch, in 14k yellow gold and all in superb original condition.
The Dial
Early 50’s vintage Rolex dials are perhaps the best examples of the simplicity and elegance of the period. And this Crown, Hearts and Arrows, gold dial is to our eyes, one of the most beautiful. It is also in superb original condition, showing no signs of aging to the naked eye. Only under high magnification can the faintest signs of crazing and some very slight fading be found. There is no mottling, pitting or cracking. There is also nothing to suggest the dial has been restored. Only perhaps that it is in such good condition! Our considered opinion is, it is original.
The Case
Again very special in having the most attractive and desirable ‘Bombay’ sculptured case. This removes the clumsy block angles of the sports case and replaces them with much softer and more fluid lines of the ‘Bombay’ dress watch design.
Professionally cleaned and lightly polished the solid 14ct solid yellow gold case is in superb condition showing hardly any signs of wear. In fact we have carefully examined and photographed the case under high magnification lenses and from all angles and we are struggling to find any marks or other signs of wear or use. The screw back design has its rubber seal intact and this is also in ‘almost as new’ condition.
The case measures just over 33mm wide, excluding the Rolex Oyster crown and 40mm, including the lugs. Inside caseback all is as expected. Signed MONTRES ROLEX SA, GENEVA SWISS, 1560 PATENTED with the model number 1011. It is appropriately double hallmarked for Geneva and 14ct 0.585 gold.
The Movement
The very high grade Superlative Chronometer Cal 1560 Rolex automatic movement has just been serviced and is running perfectly. It is again correctly signed ‘MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA’, ‘SWISS’, and ‘TWENTY FIVE 25 JEWELS’.. These movements are incredibly strong, accurate, and reliable! This particular movement again looks incredibly clean. The movement winds and sets nicely and keeps accurate time. This movement carries a 12 month warranty. With regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to run happily for another lifetime! We will be happy to assist with servicing.
The Strap & Buckle
A very high quality, new ‘croc’ leather, padded strap is fitted with an aftermarket gold plated Rolex buckle.
Box and Papers
There are no original papers with this watch. However the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct and date the watch to 1953. A detailed written receipt, with a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale.
In Conclusion
This is an extremely desirable and highly collectable vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy. This is exactly the kind of watch we love to buy and sell. And even though prices have moved on a little in recent years we still feel Rolex watches from this period are undervalued. And as every year goes by the world market for vintage Swiss gold watches grows almost exponentially and so the law of supply and demand means prices climb ever higher.
