In 1910, Rolex became the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision and in 1926, the Oyster watch, an enduring part of the Rolex collection, became the world’s first waterproof and dustproof watch. The first automatic winding watch is also a Rolex creation, debuting in 1931.

Description

Looking very similar in appearance to a Patek Phillipe Calatrava of the same period, here we have a very rare Oversize 18ct pink gold Rolex Precision from 1955 with a beautiful white 3-6-9 dial. Oversize Rolex Precisions in Pink Gold are very rare and highly sought after and with its 35mm diameter size, with a stunning dial, we have here particularly special vintage gold, Rolex gentleman’ s dress watch.

Dial

The classic Rolex 3 – 6 – 9 dial is one of our favourites and the teardrop hour indices make it even more charming. The dial has been restored to the highest standards by one of the best dial restorers, if not the best in the U.K. Please view all the photographs for a full appreciation of this clean off-white/cream coloured dial and note some of the photographs show some darker areas and lines which are solely the result of poor lighting.  The watch features gilt 3 – 6 – 9 – 12 and teardrop hour indices, transcribed by the original restored period ‘leaf’ hands. 18ct Pink Gold cased Rolex Precisions of this period are very rare and sought after, making this a superb Rolex collectors’ piece or the centrepiece of a small Rolex collection.

The Movement

The original high grade Cal.700 15 Jewel hand wound movement is in immaculate condition and has just been fully restored by our (vintage Rolex specialist) watchmaker. The movement is therefore back to almost new condition and is ready for another lifetime of dedicated service. It has been timed to run within +10 seconds per day which is outstanding for a vintage watch of this age!  This original movement is correctly signed Rolex Precision, 15 Jewels and Swiss Made. The watch will be ready for a service in around 4 years’ time and we would be delighted to help with this at a competitive rate. We have no hesitation in providing 12 months warranty with this watch which can be extended to up to five years if requested.

The Watch Case

The original oversize, Rolex 18ct Pink Gold case has been fully restored and is in immaculate condition from every viewpoint. The case has been expertly restored by our watch-case-maker to the point where as we see, even under high magnification the case looks almost new, save for one or two tiny marks caused by opening the watch from time to time, but which are hardly visible to the naked eye. The case measures 35mm in diameter, not including the matching pink gold crown. Note, 1950s Rolex Precisions are sized between 30mm and 36mm. Men wore much smaller watches during this time period, therefore very few Rolex Precisions were made above 34mm. This makes these watches rare and collectible. Size also makes a great deal of difference to the wearability today and therefore the value. The inside of the case-back is correctly signed Rolex, Swiss Made with correct Geneva Swiss 18ct Hallmarks.

Strap and Buckle

A new high quality conker ‘croc’ leather strap is fitted with a gold plated Rolex buckle. ***Note if a different colour or style of strap is preferred we will do our best to provide your choice, at no extra charge.  If your wrist size is less than 17.cm or more than 22.5cm in circumference, please do let us know.

Box and Papers

Although there are are no original papers with this watch, the markings and serial numbers are all correct, dating it to 1955. A fully detailed written receipt with our 12 month warranty and our Vintage Gold Watches Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee will all be provided with the sale of the watch. Also a Vintage Gold Watches Certificate of Authenticity and your Insurance Valuation and your ‘Particulars of Sale’ with photographs and details of the watch taken from this listing will be included. A matching Rolex presentation box, will also be included in the sale of this watch.

This is a very desirable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy! Even though prices continue to climb, we still feel gold Rolex watches from this period are undervalued and as each year passes, the world market for vintage Swiss gold watches is growing almost exponentially so this means prices are highly likely to remain on their steep climb trajectory.
