Rolex Oyster Perpetual ‘Date’ 9K 35mm 1958 – Sorry Now Sold 29th March 2016

Description

This watch is known by Rolex as model 1500, and carries the Superlative Chronometer Grade (highly accurate and highly reliable) Cal.1560 automatic movement with a ‘Date’ function.  This watch was manufactured in 1958 and has a solid 9ct gold case. This watch is in ‘top original’ condition.

The Rolex Oyster case with its screw down crown and screw down case-back made the Rolex Oyster Perpetual the world’s first waterproof automatic wristwatch, “offering complete protection against water, perspiration and dust”.

This watch is all 100% original including the dial which is in superb condition and yet it has not been restored and untouched. The case is the large size 35mm and is in mint, unrestored condition. This all leads one to suspect this watch has only been lightly used and has been very well cared for.

The Dial

Here we have the beautiful classic Rolex gold dial with Rolex the signature Crown at 12 o’clock and 1960s ‘Stick’ batons denoting each hour, plus a small minutes track. All on a totally original and untouched gold dial. With the Date function at 3 o’clock this is all Classic 1960s Rolex design.

The superb original yellow gold dial and gold hands are all in top condition. In addition to the Rolex signature Crown, the dial is simply signed Rolex, Oyster-Perpetual Date and Officially Certified ‘Superlative Chronometer’ and ‘Swiss’ at the very bottom of the dial. The dial is very clear and easy to read even in low light,

The mint condition heavy duty lens has no marks and a 2.5 x magnifying glass making the date easily readable at arm’s length.

The Case

This is the original Swiss hallmarked 9K solid gold case, measuring 35mm in diameter, not including the Rolex Oyster screw down crown. This watch has the more desirable smooth bezel and highly polished full thickness case-back showing it has never been inscribed. In fact all of the case is in top original condition and it has simply received a professional clean and careful light polish. Inside the case-back are two Swiss 9ct hallmarks and 0.375-9K. There are also two RWCo signatures, along with MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA SWITZERLAND, the model number 1500 and the case serial number 109,xxx.

The Movement

This is the original high grade “Officially Certified Superlative Chronometer” 26 Jewels, 1560 Calibre movement which is highly desirable for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong. It is in excellent condition and is working perfectly following a thorough inspection and service by one of our Master Watchmakers. It is signed MONTRES ROLEX SA GENEVA and TWENTY SIX JEWELS, ADJUSTED FIVE POSITIONS. The movement carries the correct movement number D12677 and the calibre number 1560. The movement has been calibrated and timed and is running strongly and accurately at around + or minus 5 seconds per day and is now ready for many more years of reliable service. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement*.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new very high quality black croc print leather strap. The buckle is a matching aftermarket Rolex yellow gold plated. Note if a different colour or different style strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to provide one free of charge.

The Box and Papers

There are no original papers with this watch, however the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct, dating the watch to 1958. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The high quality, hardwood presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale. If an original vintage Rolex matching presentation box is required, as shown on some other of our Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch listings here, we will be happy to include one at the cost to us which is usually midway between £100 and £200.

In Conclusion

This is a superb example of a late ‘50s vintage gold Rolex in stunning condition. It is also completely practical and ready for use as an everyday watch if required and if treated carefully, with respect, it is also an excellent investment or heirloom piece, particularly when found in such superb condition.

This is a highly collectable vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
