Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubble Back 18ct Rose Gold – Sorry Sold 11/07/14

Description

This model, known by Rolex as the 6085 has a Chronometer grade (highly accurate) movement, a Bubble Back, and a Super-Oyster crown and was only manufactured for between 2 and 3yrs making it highly desirable and collectable. The 6085 was one of a handful of Rolex models to feature the short-lived Super-Oyster crown which was produced for around three years. The Super-Oyster winding crown was developed by Rolex to create a waterproof winding crown which did not need to be screwed down. While the system itself worked well, in time if not properly serviced, the rubber seal perished weakening the seal, and so this crown type was phased out after a few years of production. Housed in Rolex water-tight Oyster cases these were some of the first automatic wristwatches offering complete protection against water, dust and perspiration.

This Rolex Oyster Perpetual (automatic) also has an 18ct solid Rose gold case. Rose gold cases were also quite rare during this period. Add in the Bubble-Back case accommodating the early chronometer grade movement and here we have here a highly desirable and collectable wristwatch.

The Dial

This is the original dial with the classic rose gold Rolex Crown at 12 o’clock and ‘3 6 9’ numerals over the cream/white dial. It is our favourite design and here is a particularly beautiful example. The original, restored rose gold ‘Dauphine’ hands and blued steel needle seconds hand are all in excellent condition. In addition to the Rolex Crown, the dial is simply signed Rolex, Oyster-Perpetual and ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ and Swiss at the very bottom of the dial. This is the original dial which has been restored to the very highest standards. The dial is very clear and easy to read in low light and the lens is new.

The Case

This is the original Swiss hallmarked 18K rose gold case, measuring 34mm in diameter without the crown. As mentioned this is a rare watch due to the Thunderbird bezel, the Bubble-Back and the fact that is is made in 18ct rose gold. The Thunderbird bezel is showing some signs of wear commensurate with age, which if anything adds character to the watch. The rest of the case, the sides, lugs and case back are all in superb condition. The Bubble-Back in particular is in beautiful condition and it has never been engraved or damaged. The Bubble-Back is so called due to the bulbous round back needed to accommodate the early automatic movement and rotor which was a little too large for a standard flat back case when first introduced.

The case has been professionally cleaned and lightly polished and is looking superb. Inside the case back are two Swiss 18ct hallmarks and 0.750-18K. Also the beautifully ornate early Rolex emblem and signature along with ROLEX PATENTED 6085. The case is a large size 34mm in diameter not including the original Rolex Super Oyster Crown (see ref above).

The Movement

This is the original high grade “Officially Certified Chronometer” 19 Jewels, 645 calibre movement which is known for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong. It is in excellent condition and is working perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service by our Master Watchmaker. It is signed ROLEX PERPETUAL and SWISS MADE. The movement has been time checked and timed and is running strongly and accurately and is now ready for many more years of reliable service. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement* Please note the ‘2 Rubies’ marked on the rotor applies to the rotor only.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new high quality black croc print leather strap. The buckle is a matching aftermarket Rolex yellow gold plated. Note if a different colour or different style strap is preferred please let us know and we will do our best to provide one free of charge.

The Box and Papers

There are no original papers with this watch, however the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct, dating the watch to c1953. A detailed written receipt, with a 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The vintage Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale if the list price is paid.

In Conclusion

This beautiful vintage 18ct gold Rolex is in superb condition and is ready for use and is completely practical, useable and wearable today. It is also an excellent investment, particularly when found in such great condition.

This is also a highly collectable vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
