Here we have a very rare and simply wonderful Rolex Oyster Perpetual ‘Bombé’ in 18ct Pink Gold from 1950. This is the rare Rolex model reference 6018, so-called “Bombay” by collectors, referring to the bombé (sculpted) lugs on the case.
This example has seen extremely light use and is in mint condition. In fact, judging by the accompanying original presentation box, this watch has probably remained in a safe for most of its life, since it looks almost new! This watch also has its original Super Oyster winding crown which only remained a feature of the Oyster Perpetual for three years, also adding to the rarity of this watch, and it has the sought after smooth bezel.
The high grade Rolex Cal.640, 18 Jewels Certified Chronometer Grade (highly accurate and highly reliable) automatic movement has a 41 hour power reserve and following its overhaul and service, is performing perfectly within +1 sec / day!
The rarity, beauty and condition of this vintage Rolex makes it a very special timepiece!
A beautifully elegant silver white dial with matching pink gold ‘Dauphine’ hands and pink gold pencil hour indices. This simple design reflects the Rolex style of the late 1940s and is beautifully symmetrical and well balanced. The dial perfectly matches the bezel and case, making this perhaps one of the most beautiful Oyster Perpetuals money can buy. This is the original dial which has been restored to the very highest standards.
The Rolex Oyster, Swiss hallmarked, 18ct pink gold case, measures 33.5mm in diameter, not including the original Rolex ‘Super Oyster’ crown. This beautiful ‘Bombé’ design case with beautiful sculpted lugs makes this a very attractive watch case, but in 18ct Pink Gold, these are almost never seen. The reason for this is because these watches were only made to special order on behalf of a specific customer. Furthermore, pink gold was not so popular at the time, so very few were made. This watch also has the ‘Super Oyster’ winding crown which has additional seals, negating the need for a screw-down crown. This was used for a period of less than three years from 1950 onwards, also adding to the rarity of the watch.
The case also has the sought after smooth bezel which just like the rest of the case, is in immaculate condition.
Inside the case-back, all the markings are correct and as expected. Geneva Swiss 18ct hallmarks and 0.0750 18K, with the beautiful, older, Rolex scroll and signature; Geneva Swiss Rolex Patented and the model number 6018. Between the lugs at 12 o’clock is the clearly defined model number ‘6018’ and between the lugs at 6 o’clock, the serial number of the watch ‘693919’ is also clearly defined, indicating the year of manufacture as 1950.
This watch has its original high grade “Officially Certified Chronometer” 18 Jewels, Calibre.640, Super Balance, automatic movement which is highly regarded for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong. The movement is working perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service and after calibration and timing, is running strongly and extremely accurately at + 1 seconds per day,** which is truly outstanding for a watch movement of this age!
The movement is signed Rolex Auto Rotor, Swiss Made Patented Super Balance.
This watch movement is now ready for many more years of faithful service and is perfectly suited for daily use and is offered with 12 months warranty on the movement*.
*Please note our 12 months warranty is only applicable if the list price is paid.
** One of our most accurate results so far this year!

This is a truly first class example of a 1950 vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual which is ready to wear and completely practical for everyday use. If treated with care, it will make an excellent investment or heirloom piece and even though vintage gold Rolex prices have risen markedly recently, we still feel good examples such as this are still undervalued. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to expand, prices will continue to climb ever higher.
To summarise, this is a highly collectable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which is ready to wear, use, treasure and enjoy, providing excellent reliability and a sound financial investment, as long-lasting as the watch itself!
A word on our prices… We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before then restoring them to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are some well-known stores in West London which are highly successful charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.
