I have no hesitation in recommending.
From start to finish the service I have received has been excellent. Kirsty has kept me informed all the way and the level of the finished repair to a very old and worn vintage watch was exemplary.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

Description

In spectacular condition, here we have a fully restored gentleman’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 9ct solid yellow gold from 1954/1955, with the more sought after Rolex smooth bezel. Known by Rolex as model 6564, this watch carries the high grade Rolex Cal.1030, 25 Jewel, Chronometer (highly accurate and highly reliable) movement. In addition to the smooth bezel, other notable features are the beautifully restored Off-White dial with original Dauphine hands, which have also been restored to an equally high standard. The absence of a date function contributes to a perfectly balanced dial, crowned of course with the perennial Rolex ‘Coronet’ at 12 o’clock. This watch is in amazing condition throughout and is the classic Rolex timepiece, perfectly suited for all occasions and also for everyday use.

The Dial

The original slightly Off-White dial looks superb with original Dauphine hands and faceted applied ‘Pencil’ hour indices, giving a very classic appearance to the watch. The hands have also been beautifully restored and are in immaculate condition, matching the dial, case and movement. In addition to the Rolex signature ‘Coronet’ at 12 0′clock, the dial is simply signed ‘Rolex’, ‘Oyster Perpetual’ and ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ with ‘Swiss,’ at the very bottom of the dial. A new Rolex lens has been fitted and therefore has no marks or scratches. This is the original Rolex dial which has been restored to the very highest standards by the best dial restorers in the UK.

The Movement

This watch carries its original, high grade Chronometer 25 Jewel, 1030 calibre movement which is highly regarded for its accuracy, reliability and robustness. This movement has the much lighter Butterfly rotor, so called for its similarity to a butterfly wing. The movement is in spectacular condition and working absolutely perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. This involves completely dismantling the watch movement to each of its component parts, cleaning and close examination under high magnification, then replacement where necessary, with only original Rolex parts, before reassembly and oiling with the correct Rolex specified, watch movement oils. Finally, very fine adjustment to achieve the highest level of accuracy possible. After testing, this watch is now running arrow straight at +2 seconds/day, which is outstanding for any watch of this age. This is no exaggeration as this has been confirmed by our electronic Timegrapher. The movement also has a 48 hour power reserve. The watch is now ready for many more decades of faithful, reliable service and is perfectly suited for everyday use. We are therfore pleased to be able to offer 12 months’ warranty on the movement*

The movement is all correctly signed Montres Rolex SA, Geneve Swiss and carries the Calibre number 1030 and the movement ref number 631919.

*Please note, our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the list price is paid.

The Case

In immaculate condition, the original 9ct solid yellow gold case measures 34mm in diameter, excluding the Rolex Oyster screw-down crown. The highly desirable smooth bezel is immaculate, as are the lugs, case body, and case- back which importantly has never been inscribed. Equally importantly, the case has also never been over polished, as many gold watches of this age have been. To summarise the case condition, there are no scratches, dings, marks or other flaws visible to the naked eye.

The case has been professionally cleaned and carefully examined for any stress marks or areas of potential weakness. It has then been very lightly hand-polished, which was all which was required to bring it back to its current immaculate condition! Inside the case-back, is all correctly signed and marked as expected. Interestingly, on this watch there happen to be two sets of hallmarks: Swiss Geneva 9ct and also 9ct U.K. Glasgow hallmarks from 1955. The inside of the case-back is all correctly signed just as it should be: Montres Rolex SA, Geneva Switzerland with the Rolex Model Reference Number 6564 and on the outside of the case between the lugs at 6 o’clock is the Rolex Case Serial No. 309,241, which dates the watch to 1954. Finally, between the lugs at 12 o’clock, the case is marked again with the Rolex Model Reference Number 6564.

Since the case was marked with its Rolex Case Serial Number in Switzerland in 1954 and with its U.K. hallmarks in 1955, it is quite reasonable to regard this as a late 1954, or an early 1955 watch. We will leave this choice to you!

Please note, as part of the restoration we have replaced all the rubber seals on the case-back and the winding crown and stem tube. However, although the watch was specified as waterproof when new, this has not been tested and it is not guaranteed.  Here, our standard advice applies: Vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.

Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with the watch, the numbers and markings are all correct, dating this watch to 1954/55. A detailed written receipt with 12 months’ warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The Rolex Oyster presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale.

The Strap & Buckle

A new high quality Tan Crocodile strap has been fitted, along with a matching gold plated Rolex buckle. However, if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black straps in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most types and colours from our partners at ‘Watch Obsession’ within 48hrs. Please take a look at their Hirsch range of 19mm straps if you wish here.

In Conclusion

We have here a superb example of a mid 1950s vintage gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual in immaculate condition. It is the classic Rolex automatic of the period, the evolution of which remains in production to this day. It is completely practical for everyday use and if treated with care, will make an excellent investment and heirloom piece.

Even though vintage Rolex prices have risen markedly in the past few years, we still feel fine examples such as this, have a very long way to go.  We say this because as every year passes, the global market for vintage Rolex watches is expanding rapidly, with a subsequent effect on prices.

In summary, this is a highly collectable vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which is ready to wear, use, treasure and enjoy. It will also provide excellent reliability and a sound financial investment – as long-lasting as the watch itself!

We guarantee you will never be disappointed with this watch!  From every aspect and no matter how closely you look, it is immaculate and cannot be faulted.

A word on our prices – We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before restoring them to the highest possible standards and presenting them for sale. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are some well known stores in West London which are highly successful charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.

We are happy to accept PayPal as this is the quickest method of payment. However, if you would like to pay by UK cheque or by UK bank transfer we will be pleased to assist you with this and pass on a 3% saving to you.
