I have no hesitation in recommending.
From start to finish the service I have received has been excellent. Kirsty has kept me informed all the way and the level of the finished repair to a very old and worn vintage watch was exemplary.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

Description

Here we have a beautiful, fully restored Ladies cocktail watch in 18ct rose gold with matching 15ct expanding bracelet and original presentation box. All made and supplied by John Dyson and Sons, Jewellers, Leeds.

This c.1912 18K Solid Gold Ladies Oversized Cocktail Watch with 15K Gold Bracelet has a “Half Hunter Style Case”. The hinged dial cover opens to reveal a beautiful dial consisting of what we will try to describe as three rings/chapters. The solid 18ct Gold Half Hunter four-piece case consists of the hinged dial cover, watch case and both inner and outer hinged movement covers, all of which are hallmarked.

For a watch over 110 years old this is a beautiful piece in amazing condition! In fact a time-warp timepiece!

The Case

The original, rare 18ct solid rose gold oversize case measures 25mm in diameter. The cases inner movement cover is inscribed with “Ollie from Cecil”. This does not detract from the overall presentation, as it can only be viewed once the outer case-back is opened and we think this adds to the romance of the piece. From every viewpoint, the case is in immaculate condition having simply been lightly cleaned and carefully hand-polished. It has a London importers hallmark (Constellation of Leo), and date letter “r” for 1912-1913. There is also a case makers/sponsors mark “LW” which is, we think, Louis Weill of Hatton Garden, London.

The Dial

The dial is a three-ring telephone dial with the central hours sector consisting of 12 smaller raised circles, incorporating Roman numeral hour markers, a “rail track” style middle chapter ring marking the minutes and finally the outer surrounding part of the dial, this being a beautifully machined and decorated chapter ring!

The Movement

The original hand-wound 15 Jewels movement has been fully overhauled and serviced by our watchmaker who reports it to be in excellent condition. The movement is unsigned, however this was quite normal for the time so it is safe to assume this watch was made and supplied by John Dyson & Sons Ltd of Leeds, who are still in existence in Commercial St, Leeds LS1 6EX. Following its service, the movement is running accurately and strongly and is offered with twelve months’ warranty*. Although watches of this period have reliable and accurate movements, they do need to be treated with some care and while perfectly suited for evening wear, the watch was not made for everyday use.

*Note – Our 12 Months’ warranty only included if the list price is paid.

The Bracelet

The 15ct rose gold hallmarked stretch bracelet, is we believe, original to this watch case, even though it is a different grade of gold. The bracelet links are sprung, as would have been the norm for this style and era of watch. Once again, as with the watch, the bracelet is in superb condition with all the springs working as they should and no stretching at all.

The Box and Papers

Although there is no original paperwork with this watch, the reference numbers, markings, signatures and hallmarks are all correct and date the watch to 1912.

Detailed particulars are included with the receipt, along with our 12 months’ Warranty*. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. This will also include our ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.

The original, beautiful, deep red Moroccan leather box is in great condition for its age. It has a silk lining with the inscription John Dyson and Sons – Jewellers and Watchmakers, with their original Leeds address. The outside of the leather box is edged with an embossed pattern.

In Conclusion

This is a superb example of an early 1900s 18k Gold Ladies Cocktail Watch and one which would have been a specific commission for a special occasion or person. It is in immaculate condition, which makes this a very rare and probably a ‘one of a kind’ example. It is completely practical and ready to wear to that special occasion or as a beautiful present for that special person. Treated carefully, it is also an excellent investment or heirloom piece, particularly when found in such excellent condition. We feel good examples such as this are becoming more difficult to locate and are undervalued and as each year goes by the market for vintage gold watches continues to expand resulting in prices climbing even higher. This is a highly collectable vintage gold watch which should provide an excellent financial investment as well as being something to treasure and enjoy.
